FTC Announces Automatic Amazon Prime Refund Payouts

5K

The Federal Trade Commission announced on September 17 that Amazon will accelerate and expand settlement payments, with eligible consumers receiving up to $200 automatically starting October 1. Under the revised terms of last year's $2.5 billion agreement, which resolved allegations regarding unauthorized Prime subscriptions and difficulty in cancellation, no claim forms or paperwork are required for distribution. Payments will be issued via Venmo, PayPal, or mailed checks without any need from consumers to submit claims, respond to notices, or complete additional forms. While the FTC confirmed that over $845 million has already been distributed as of September 2026, consumer advocates warn potential scammers may exploit these refund announcements by posing as officials or sending fraudulent emails requesting personal information.
