Five French Humanitarians Killed in Togo Bus Accident During Humanitarian Mission

On October 21, 2025, a tragic road accident in Yomaboua, Togo, resulted in the deaths of five French humanitarian volunteers and injuries to eight others. The victims, aged between 70 and 75, were members of the Lions Club involved in a mission to inaugurate a maternity hospital in Tchantanga, funded by their organization. The accident occurred when a tire burst on their minibus, causing the vehicle to lose control and overturn under a bridge, amid the rainy season, which worsens road conditions in West Africa. Among the deceased are residents from La Ciotat, Aubagne, and Valenciennes, including a general practitioner, a former bookseller, and members of the Lions Club. The incident has prompted an outpouring of grief from local authorities and the Lions Club, emphasizing the victims' dedication to humanitarian service. The French government and local authorities are coordinating the investigation and the repatriation of the victims' bodies. The accident underscores the dangers of travel in the region due to poor road conditions and highlights the risks faced by aid workers in conflict-prone areas.
