Sierra Leone Launches First Renewable-Powered 5G Network

Sierra Leone has launched its first 5G network powered entirely by renewable energy sources, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital and energy transition. The project, led by local telecom company Zoodlabs and African energy provider CrossBoundary Energy, was announced at the Digital Government Summit in Freetown. The network utilizes solar photovoltaic panels, batteries, and backup generators to ensure high reliability while minimizing fossil fuel use, achieving 99.9% uptime. This green 5G infrastructure enables faster internet speeds, lower latency, and supports applications such as smart cities, remote healthcare, IoT, and online education. With broadband penetration at only 20.7%, the initiative aims to greatly expand access across Sierra Leone. Zoodlabs CEO David Kapkima emphasized the role of 5G in powering various sectors and highlighted renewable energy's importance in building resilient infrastructure. The project exemplifies a scalable model for Africa, demonstrating how combining modern technology with sustainable energy can foster economic growth, improve digital inclusion, and support climate-resilient development.
