Warsaw Referendum on Trzaskowski's Removal Fails

1K

A referendum to remove Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski from office will not take place because organizers collected fewer than the required number of signatures. Maciej Wilk, who initiated the campaign, stated that only 111,000 valid signatures were gathered out of a needed 132,000, falling short of the 10 percent threshold set by voters in recent local elections. The referendum would have also required an approval rate of three-fifths from eligible voters to be legally binding.

Trzaskowski confirmed on social media that the initiative failed and announced he will continue his two-year mandate without interruption, focusing on city development projects supported by a majority of residents. He thanked supporters who expressed trust in his vision while addressing critics directly, promising they would have reasons for pride and satisfaction regarding Warsaw's progress over the next years.

Organizers criticized political parties, including PiS, for their lack of engagement during the signature drive despite promises to assist. Wilk noted that volunteers worked through 60 days of heat and rain but expressed disappointment at the apathy from organizations expected to help. While acknowledging the failure as a specific defeat, he maintained confidence in the campaign's impact on making previously impossible issues solvable.
