German Foreign Minister Delivers Firm Message to Lavrov
On Saturday in New York at the UN General Assembly, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov for a brief session lasting just over twenty minutes. This marked the first bilateral meeting between the two nations' foreign ministers since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
During their discussion at the UN headquarters, Wadephul conveyed Berlin's clear demands: Moscow must end its war against Ukraine and cease hostile actions toward Germany and its allies. While maintaining that diplomatic dialogue remains open to both sides, he emphasized a hard condition for further negotiations—that Russia seriously engages in talks aimed at lasting peace.
Wadephul also stressed the necessity of international responsibility regarding safe artificial intelligence development, warning that such technology does not wait for institutions to catch up. Meanwhile, Lavrov reportedly stated after their meeting that Wadephul simply read a prepared text without revealing any new information.
