Niedersachsen Polls Show SPD and CDU Tied, AfD Surges, Green and Left Lose Majority

Recent polls in Niedersachsen reveal a tight race between SPD and CDU, both at 26%, with the AfD reaching a record high of 20%. The Greens remain at 12%, and the Left would enter the parliament with 6%. The current coalition of SPD and Greens no longer holds a majority, with only a potential red-black (SPD-CDU) coalition viable. The survey indicates that Olaf Lies, the SPD candidate and current Minister President, maintains a positive approval rating of 43%. The poll also shows that 65% of Niedersachsen residents feel safe, and there is significant support (67%) for stricter cellphone bans in schools. Major issues cited include education, migration, economy, and traffic. The political landscape suggests a shift away from the previous majority, with the AfD gaining ground amid losses for CDU and Greens. The findings are based on a survey of over 1,150 residents conducted by infratest dimap for the NDR, with a margin of error of 2-3%. Overall, the results highlight a volatile political climate ahead of the next state election scheduled for 2027.
