India-Oman Relations Focus on Maritime Security and Strategic Partnerships During PM Modi’s Visit

India and Oman are strengthening their strategic partnership, with maritime security identified as a central pillar of their collaboration. The Indian envoy in Oman highlighted that defense cooperation, including joint military exercises and coast guard meetings, has been a key component since 2008. An upcoming memorandum of understanding (MOU) aims to deepen defense collaboration further. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oman, his second, coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and follows Sultan Haitham bin Tariq’s recent visit to India. Modi’s trip includes discussions on trade, energy, defense, technology, and cultural exchanges, emphasizing regional and global issues of mutual interest. The Indian community in Oman, numbering around 675,000, eagerly awaits Modi’s arrival. The visit underscores the importance of economic ties, with Indians contributing significantly to Oman’s sectors like steel, green hydrogen, and port management. Historically, India and Oman have maintained a 5,000-year-old trade relationship, with ongoing cooperation spanning maritime trade, coin exchange, and other sectors for over 250 years. During his stay, Modi will hold comprehensive talks with Sultan Haitham, focusing on enhancing bilateral relations across multiple domains. The Indian envoy also stressed the importance of collaboration in sustainable development and investment opportunities, which are vital for Oman’s growth. The visit reflects a deepening of the strategic partnership, with a focus on defense, economic development, and regional stability.
