Riot Rescues Hytale: Ambitious Minecraft Rival Returns After Studio Reverts Control

After a prolonged and unsuccessful development phase, the ambitious sandbox RPG 'Hytale' by Hypixel Studios was initially canceled following Riot Games' acquisition of the studio in 2020. The game, which gained massive hype after its 2018 announcement and trailer, faced delays due to its increasing technical ambitions, leading Riot to cut funding in June 2025 and close Hypixel Studios gradually. However, five months later, co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announced that Riot had returned control of Hytale to the original developers, stating, 'Hytale is saved.' He expressed optimism about releasing an unfinished but promising game, emphasizing community involvement, modding, and early access to rebuild trust. The team has hired over 30 former developers to work independently, focusing on the game itself rather than perfecting the engine, with plans to support Hytale for the next ten years. Fans remain hopeful as the developers aim to deliver a raw, unpolished experience with potential, encouraging community feedback and collaboration to shape its future.
