Young German Hiker Killed by Avalanche on Zugspitze
A 19-year-old German mountaineer from Baden-Württemberg was killed in a tragic avalanche accident on the Zugspitze in Tirol. The incident occurred while he was on a climbing route and was caught by a snow slab, which swept him down steep, rocky terrain. Despite rescue efforts by mountain rescue teams, the young man, who was unroped at the time, succumbed to his injuries shortly after being found. His 21-year-old companion, secured with a carabiner, was unharmed and alerted rescue teams. The avalanche risk in Tirol was moderate at level 2 on a five-point scale, with weak snow layers still capable of triggering localized avalanches. This marks Tirol’s first avalanche fatality of the winter season. The accident highlights the dangers of mountaineering under current snow conditions, especially in high-altitude regions where snow stability remains uncertain.
