King's Visit to Munich: Queen Silvia Receives Bavarian Social Medal from Söder
Queen Silvia of Sweden was honored with the Bavarian State Medal for Social Merit during her visit to Munich, where she was welcomed by Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. The ceremony included a traditional Bavarian reception with mountain riflemen and trachten associations at Max-Joseph-Platz, followed by her signing the guestbook in the Residenz and the medal presentation in the King's Hall. Silvia, who turns 82 in December and is the longest-serving queen of Sweden, was recognized for her long-standing social engagement, particularly her efforts to protect children from sexual abuse through her foundation, World Childhood Foundation, founded in 1999. She has supported projects across 14 countries, including the Childhood House in Munich and a new house in Würzburg. The event was marked by a festive program, including a traditional lunch and speeches by Söder, who praised her contributions. Silvia's connection to Bavaria dates back to the 1972 Munich Olympics, where she met her future husband, King Carl XVI Gustaf, beginning a love story culminating in their marriage in 1976. The Bavarian State Medal, awarded annually since 1970 to up to 20 individuals for social service, has previously been awarded to notable figures such as athletes, actors, and politicians.
