Berlin: SPD Leader Mehmed König Leaves Party Over Disagreements and Criticizes Party's Policies

Mehmed König, a prominent member of the Berlin SPD and co-chair of SPDqueer Berlin, has announced his departure from the party. His resignation is driven by disagreements over the party's stance on Palestine solidarity, migration policies, and its handling of social and cultural funding cuts. König criticized the SPD's approach to Palestine, citing restrictions on demonstrations and marginalization of human rights criticism, which he found unacceptable. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the SPD's support for austerity measures in Berlin, which have led to significant cuts in queer projects, social organizations, and cultural initiatives. König, a refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina who joined the SPD in 2017, stated he no longer identifies with the party's current practices and values, and he is leaning toward the Left Party, praising their leadership and approach. His departure underscores internal conflicts within the SPD regarding its policies on social justice, migration, and political stance on Israel and Palestine.
