Aviation and Infrastructure: Aircraft Shortage and Berlin Road Disruptions

Avolon, a major aircraft leasing company, predicts a persistent shortage of large and narrow-body aircraft until the 2030s, citing pandemic-related production disruptions. The company reports that approximately 4,000 fewer aircraft will be built this decade, with delivery figures significantly below pre-pandemic levels—only 174 large aircraft were delivered last year, about half of pre-COVID numbers, and 1,183 narrow-body aircraft, just below pre-pandemic peaks. The shortage is expected to impact global markets, especially India, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, leading to higher ticket prices, maintenance delays, and grounded aircraft. Despite challenges, the industry remains profitable due to lower fuel costs and is well-positioned to handle economic uncertainties. Meanwhile, in Berlin-Spandau, traffic congestion on Heerstraße has reoccurred due to roadworks and a water pipe burst on Pichelsdorfer Straße, which was temporarily closed. Although the pipe has been repaired, ongoing construction delays are worsened by weather conditions and asphalt supply shortages, extending the project timeline by about nine months. These infrastructure issues highlight ongoing urban development challenges in Berlin, affecting daily traffic flow.
