Deutsche Bahn Initiates Investigation into Stuttgart 21 Delays Amid Costly Setbacks
The CEO of Deutsche Bahn, Evelyn Palla, has announced an internal investigation into the repeated delays and cost overruns of the Stuttgart 21 railway project. Originally scheduled to open in 2019, the project has faced multiple postponements, with the latest delay pushing the opening to at least 2026 and total costs rising from an initial €2.6 billion to approximately €11.45 billion. Palla emphasized the need for a comprehensive analysis of the reasons behind these setbacks and announced that the performance of the project's main contractor, Hitachi, will also be scrutinized due to issues with complex IT implementations. She stated, 'No stone will be left unturned,' indicating a thorough review to identify and rectify project management failures and prevent future errors in large infrastructure projects. The new opening date remains uncertain, and the focus is on avoiding hasty decisions that could lead to further mistakes. The delays and escalating costs have also drawn political concern, with government officials and regional leaders criticizing the project's management and its impact on Germany's image.
