India Decides on Overseas Analysis of Black Box in Air India Crash
India is considering whether to send the flight data and cockpit voice recorders from the recent Air India Boeing 787 crash to the United States for analysis due to heavy damage sustained in the crash. The crash occurred less than a minute after takeoff from Ahmedabad, resulting in at least 270 fatalities. The black boxes, recovered from the crash site, are severely damaged, making data extraction challenging. India's newly established Rs 9 crore black box lab in Delhi, inaugurated in April, has yet to be fully operational for such complex recoveries. Consequently, India plans to send the recorders to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) for detailed analysis, with involvement from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch, as British citizens were among the casualties. The damaged recorders will undergo delicate operations to extract data, which could take days to months, depending on the extent of damage. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the crash, including potential mechanical failures, electronic malfunctions, or fuel issues. Meanwhile, the airline has conducted safety inspections on its fleet, and flights are being reduced temporarily as safety measures.
